The Letter was inspired by the personal story of Goran Zelic, who experienced the war in Croatia as a child. During this time, he received a letter from an Irish child as humanitarian aid. As part of the project’s development, the team collaborated with children through a series of workshops designed to open out fresh conversations around friendship, enmity, conflict, fear, diversity, care, and hope.
These workshops took place in schools across both Dublin and Longford, with the aim of encouraging the young participants to express their opinions and ideas which would inform the eventual material of the play. Following this, a universal story was created, highlighting the power of how one gesture can leave an indelible mark on a person’s life – changing their reality and giving them strength and hope for the future. Thanks to the children from Sacred Heart Tallaght who were part of the project in association with The Civic.
