A Likely Story Productions are delighted to bring their sell-out, hit show ‘The Voice Within – A Showband Story’ to The Civic for it’s Dublin premiere. This original play with music, written by company co-founders Carol Gleeson and Helen Spring, continues it’s hugely successful run having wowed audiences in Kildare and Carlow over the past number of months. We had a chat with cast member Seán in advance of the show….

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself, and where you grew up?
My name is Seán Mac Mathúna. I’m an actor from Leixlip, Co. Kildare.

What is your background in performing?
I trained at Bow Street Academy. However, I started performing way back in my old school, Confey College in Leixlip and my first role was ‘Joseph’ in ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat’. I’ll never forget the thrill and panic I experienced performing onstage for the first time! I loved it. From then on, I haven’t stopped and have been so fortunate to have performed so many brilliant roles along the way, including this one in ‘The Voice Within’.

Tell us a bit about your involvement in ‘The Voice within: A Showband Story’
Helen and Carol approached me almost and year and a half ago to get involved. Sometimes you can be a little apprehensive when it comes to taking on new material, but I was sold straight away with ‘The Voice Within’. I play Tommy O’Grady and it’s a wonderful part to play. An actor’s dream really, as it is a character who is so complicated and goes on a real journey. Singing with the live Showband is a major highlight for me!

What can our Tallaght audiences expect from the show?
I believe, that audiences in Tallaght will be brought on a beautifully nostalgic journey back to the Showband era. Whether you’ve lived through it or just listen to Joe Dolan videos ad nauseam on YouTube (me!!) you will appreciate this piece of theatre. I’ve always adored this music and era and to hear people, who have lived through this wonderful period, say how accurately written and performed it was, is the highest compliment.

What’s next for you?
After this run of ‘The Voice Within’, I will once again be joining the cast of the ‘June Rodgers Christmas Show’ at Taylor’s Three Rock for the Christmas period, but before that, I am travelling to New York this summer to perform at 54 Below and the off-Broadway festival RAVE with the new Irish musical, ‘Big Shot’ in the role of Frankie. A very exciting summer indeed!

Can you tell us a random fact about yourself?
A random fact about me…I once caught Rafael Nadal’s headband in a sea of 15,000 people on the Centre Court of Wimbledon (even though I wish it were Federer’s!)
