Kevin Brady is an acclaimed Jazz Drummer and has teamed up with the Irish Baroque Orchestra to present composer Hollis Taylors’ Groove Theory on Saturday, 24th November at the Civic Theatre, Tallaght.

What is your favorite word?
Currently my favourite word is ‘reciprocate’.
What is your least favorite word?
My least favorite word at the moment would be ‘awesome’.
What sound or noise do you love?
My 1942 Zildjian K Ride Cymbal.
What sound or noise do you hate?
The sound from a Hofner Bass Guitar.
What profession other than yours would you like to attempt?
Music Therapy.
Which musician or composer would you most like to work with?
I would most like to work with Django Bates, an amazing U.K. musician, I think he is an incredible composer and I am a huge fan of his piano trio.
What is Groove Theory?
Groove Theory is a composition mixing the following musical styles: Baroque, Swing and Latin based rhythms. It consists of four parts entitled (1) Trip The Light Fantastic (2) Blues for Terra Incognita (3) Quantum Jitterbug (4) Gravity’s Tango. Hollis Taylor, the composer, is an American jazz violinist and she wanted to write a piece that reflected her interest in String Theory (the scientific theory of why you and I are on the planet today) but in musical terms. And so now we have…..Groove Theory!
Why do you think it will appeal to audiences?
I think audiences will enjoy the variety of the compositions. The grooves and interplay between myself and the IBO players will create a sound that’s very different from what people would expect from a Baroque orchestra. And the instrument combination (jazz drums, rock harpsichord and baroque strings) is VERY unusual, but it works well. We’re going to have a lot of fun playing it – and it will definitely get the audiences’ toes tapping!

About the Musician: Kevin Brady
Dublin based drummer /composer Kevin Brady has been performing professionally for 18 years. He is a founder member of the Hammond organ group Organics and is also a member of the critically acclaimed piano trio led by UK pianist Phil Ware. After studying classical piano and trumpet from an early age. His interest in drums began at 19 first at Newpark Music Centre. He later attended the Drummers Collective in New York, where his teachers were Kim Plainfield and Bobby Sanabrias.
Previous teachers have included Jeff Ballard, Matt Wilson, Ben Perowsky, Ralph Peterson, Joe Cusatis, Casey Scheurell, Elliot Zigmund and Keith Copeland and in Havana, Cuba with Jose Eladio. He achieved a Diploma in jazz performance from the Guildhall School Hall of Music in London and received a scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston, USA. In recent times he has performed with international jazz musicians; Ronnie Cuber (baritone saxophone), Ian Shaw (vocalist/pianist), Brian Kelloch (Piano), Tim Ries (saxophone),
Jesse Davis (saxophone), Guy Barker (trumpet), Jim Mullen (guitar), Bobby Watson (alto), Ulf Wakenius (guitar), Giovanni Mirabassi (piano), Tim Whitehead (sax) and on the home front has worked with Van Morrison and Choice Award nominee singer Dave Geraghty (BellX1). In 2004 he performed at the Sydney Opera House, Australia, with award winning contemporary Irish group, Grada. He has performed at many jazz clubs and festivals worldwide including; Ronnie Scotts, Pizza Express London, the Jazz Utsav Festival in India, Euro Jazz
Festival Mexico, Cork, Glasgow, and numerous other European jazz festivals and clubs. In 2008, he was invited to represent Ireland in the European Jazz Colours, Jazz Orchestra in Italy. He was recently endorsed by Bosphorus Cymbals, Vater Drumsticks and Evans Drumheads.
