Join award-winning playwright & actor David Gilna for an unforgettable evening of storytelling as he delves into the laughter and heartbreak that shape our lives. Through themes of grief, nostalgia, and the enduring power of humour, David asks the ultimate question: why do we tell the stories we do? A deeply moving and wildly entertaining night that will leave you laughing, crying, and craving more.
“Some stories heal, some stories haunt, and some fill the room with laughter—this one does it all.”
We had a chat with David in advance of his show here in The Civic.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself? Where did you grow up?
I’m David Gilna—actor, writer, producer, and storyteller. Born and bred in the People’s Republic of Swords, Co. Dublin. My hometown and community shaped me, and you’ll often find me in a local coffee shop, writing and eavesdropping (for research, of course). I love a pint of the sweet nectar of the Gods, a whiskey chaser, and a good auld chat—or pure silence, depending on the mood. If I’m not writing or rehearsing, I’m out walking ‘The Jacko.’ Family and loyalty? That’s everything to me.
Tell us about your interest in the arts and performing. How did it all begin?
It all started with The Brackenstown Talent Competition—a Riverdance mimic act. I pulled the short straw and had to play Jean Butler. None of us could dance, but we made a town hall roar with laughter—and won! That buzz led me to The National Performing Arts School, where Jill Doyle & Eamon Farrell became more than mentors. From there, I landed radio plays, commercials, and film roles, and the love affair with the entertainment business began.
Where have you performed before?
I’ve had the privilege of staging three plays in New York and touring 18 states across America with my award-winning A Bolt From D’Blue. I’ve toured Ireland, performed at The Olympia, hit the West End, taken the stage at Shakespeare’s Globe, and even made it to Broadway. But my proudest moment? Performing a play in my hometown castle.
What can Tallaght audiences expect from this show?
If I do my job right—you’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and you’ll walk out reflecting on the madness and beauty of life. Storytelling is an honour, and I give it everything.
Tell us a random fact about yourself.
In 2004, while on a J1 Visa in South Boston, I was struck by lightning—300,000 volts of electricity passed through my body, earthed out my left foot, and my heart flatlined. And no, I’m not dramatic at all. Oh, and I love lighting candles for people.
What’s next for you?
After Tallaght, Did I Ever Tell Ya heads to New York & Philadelphia, then a U.S. tour before landing back at The Lark Concert Hall on October 16th. After that? A trip to the local Intreo Office—because, you know, highs and lows of the artist’s life!
Don’t miss the show!
